I've loved to think about the visual aspect of things since basically forever. It started with decorating notebooks for classmates at high school, then making group presentations at uni, wedding/baptism photography, designing wedding invitations. Doesn't matter if using pen and paper or graphic tablet and more sophisticated software, I am always happy when in this creative process. Classic ink pen (no fancy stuff) and graphic tablet are my two best friends.
